In a recent interview on Channel Africa, Bruce Turvey, our Executive at Change Logic, shared valuable insights on the evolving role of change management in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.
Speaking with Puleng Molebatsi, Bruce explored the intersection of technology and human elements in organisational change, guiding businesses to navigate the digital transformation journey successfully.
Bruce emphasised that while organisations often focus on new systems’ financial and technological aspects, the real key to success lies in the “human element”—specifically, how well employees adopt and adapt to new technologies. “You can have the most advanced tech in place,” Bruce noted, “but if it’s not utilised properly, you won’t see the return on your investment.”
He further distinguished between digitisation—the automation of manual processes—and digital transformation, which fundamentally changes a business’s operating model. Bruce gave a compelling example of how businesses like telecom companies and banks have shifted from human interaction to digital platforms, streamlining operations and improving customer experience.
One of the standout moments of the conversation was Bruce’s five-question framework for businesses to consider before implementing new technology. These questions, such as “Are we picking the right tech?” and “Are we fully committed to implementation?” provide a roadmap for aligning technology choices with business strategy and ensuring successful adoption.
Bruce’s parting advice: while getting a change manager is crucial, not all are created equal. The expertise should be “fit for purpose,” especially in the area of user adoption, which is critical for leveraging technology’s full potential.
